Yard Shunter / HGV Shunter Training

What Is a Yard Shunter / HGV Shunter?

Yard Shunters / HGV Shunters are operatives with the training and skills to ensure the movement of large vehicles safely around the site, within the company’s premises and in other areas of off-road parking that are closed to the public. They are trained to help minimise the risk of accidents that may cause workplace collisions that could lead to serious or fatal injuries.

Why take a Yard Shunter / HGV Shunter course?

This course will cover how to safely manoeuvre laden and unladen trailers, in accordance with strict health and safety guidelines. This includes inspecting vehicles and trailers and completing safety assessments to ensure correct handover procedures are met when passing goods on to other workers.

The yard shunter / HGV shunter training course will help to ensure the safety of workers when moving vehicles on-site, by helping to improve awareness of risks unique to depot environments and to help increase safety by understanding the correct coupling/uncoupling procedures.

Drivers will be taught how to be aware of potential dangers and to know the recommended HSE code of signals and to be able to manoeuvre large articulated vehicles and trailers around the site in a safe and efficient manner.

Who is a Yard Shunter / HGV Shunter course for?

This course is for those who are looking to become a yard shunter / HGV shunter with little to no experience of working as a shunter, the course would be 2 days dependant on the operatives' experience and class of driving licence. For those candidates that do not hold a Class B driving license, a bespoke training course can be tailored to fit requirements upon request.

For those who have previous experience as a shunter and are looking to either refresh their knowledge or expand on their current skillset, the duration of the shunter course would be 1 day, dependant on the operatives' level of experience and class of driving licence.

It is more beneficial to you if we carry out the training at your own site to enable us to make the training specific to the vehicle movements you require. However, we can deliver a generic programme at our training centre in Devizes.
