Driver CPC

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is a qualification for professional bus and coach drivers and lorry drivers.

Why do I need a Driver CPC?

Anyone that wants to drive a vehicle professionally for hire and reward must hold the Driver Qualification Card. If you will be driving a vehicle capable of holding more than 9 passengers or driving a vehicle that is over 3.5 tonnes and want to be paid to do so then you to hold a driver CPC.

You must complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to keep your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) to drive a lorry, bus or coach. Failure to do so can result in a fine of up to £1,000 for driving professionally with driver CPC certification.

Once you have passed the driver CPC course you will be sent a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) card, this card must be carried at all times whilst driving a lorry, bus or coach professionally. Failure to produce your CPC card can result in a £50 fixed penalty for driving professionally without your card.

There are 2 parts to the initial qualification:

Theory Test (CPC Module 2 - Case Study)

Conducted at the theory test centre you have 90 minutes available in which to complete the test. It is a computer-based exercise with questions covering seven different case studies, all based on real-life situations, which you may encounter as a professional LGV driver or PCV driver.

The test checks that you are able to put the knowledge you have gained from your multiple choice theory tests into practice. Each of the seven case studies contains six to eight questions, with a minimum pass mark of 40 out of 50.

The price below includes access to www.dtsanytime.co.uk to practice for this test.

Practical Test (CPC Module 4)

In order to complete the practical portion of the driver CPC training you must undertake a “Show me, Tell me” test. This is a one-day course with training in the morning and a test in the afternoon.

The test is made up of these 5 topics from the Driver CPC syllabus. You can score up to 20 points for each topic. To pass you have to score at least 15 out of 20 in each topic area and have an overall score of at least 80 out of 100.

You will be tested on:

  • Loading the vehicle following safety rules and keeping it secure
  • Reduce physical risks to yourself or others
  • Stopping trafficking in illegal immigrants
  • Assessing emergency situations
  • Carrying out a walk round vehicle safety check
