Towing Competency

The government announced from the 20th September 2021 there will no longer be a requirement to pass a driving test to tow a trailer or caravan. Candidates who possess a standard Category B car licence will be able to tow trailers and caravans up to 3500kg.

The DVSA have stated they still expect people to undertake some form of training and from a company's point of view this would fall under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) as work equipment and therefore training will still be required.

Insurance companies will also recognise someone who has had formal training as being lower risk and this should be reflected in the insurance policy and price.

What is involved in this Course?

The course is a full days trailer training course which can be conducted at our training centre or at your location either using our car and trailer or yours.

During this course, the candidate will be able to gain or develop their towing skills and be shown how to tow a trailer safely. This course will help to understand the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer and understand the legal requirements when towing trailers.

Candidates will be taught how to carry out equipment safety checks, understand how the type and weight of a trailer affect performance and safety and understand the relationship between vehicle and trailer weights and limits.

This course will establish safe means of coupling and uncoupling the trailer from a vehicle, help understand the requirements of driving the vehicle and trailer and the main causes of accidents and what can be done to avoid them.
