What is involved in the lift truck training course?

During the training course candidates will be shown hazard awareness techniques in order to minimise dangers to both the operator and those in the surrounding area. Candidates will be introduced to the forklift truck type to be used with a breakdown of the daily pre-use inspection and maintenance principles to be followed before operating the truck. How to care for vehicle-specific fuelling requirements for battery-powered, LPG and diesel trucks.

Candidates will be trained on the starting, moving and stopping of the truck and how to manoeuvre in open and confined areas. The operation of hydraulic controls and how to assess weight and stability factors will be shown. The course will provide information on the handling of unladen and laden pallets with stacking / de-stacking at various heights, with an emphasis on correct loading and unloading procedures.

During the training course, a safety video of best practices will be shown to candidates, with a theory test focusing on lift truck knowledge. Alongside this, a practical test of basic operating skills will be undertaken to test operator competency.

How often should forklift training be refreshed?

Forklift operator training should be undertaken at least once every 3-5 years. This will be sooner if an accident has occurred, or if the candidate has a long period of non-use.
