Wiltshire Council - SAFED

Wttl have been working alongside what was Kennet Council (now the unitary Wiltshire Council) to drive down their fuel costs using the SAFED programme.
The scheme has been a success, with Wiltshire Council Workforce Supervisor Ian Spanswick telling us:
“SAFED driver training has significantly reduced our fuel usage; the course also helped staff understand how driving practices have changed over the years with developments in engine technology. It has improving driving standards and reduced maintenance costs.In many cases it has made a noticeable difference in their own cars which is a benefit for all”.

“When we wanted our in-house instructors to complete a train the trainer course for SAFED the first place we turned to was Wtll, as we were already aware of the standard they provide.
Our four instructors thoroughly enjoyed their course and felt confident with the delivery to our staff. The drivers are enjoying the SAFED training and see it as a way forward to match the technology of the new buses in the fleet and cater for today’s road and traffic conditions.

After a brief break, 2010 saw Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service resume LGV Cat C training with Wttl.
Since mid January this year, we have had seven candidates attend our standard 5-day course, with all seven passing first time. As you can imagine this is something we at Wttl are very proud of, and it would not be possible without candidates who are willing to learn and arrive on day 1 raring to go.
The 'Magnificent Seven' are:

Peake (GB) Ltd - Benefits of Training

Peake (GB) Ltd, based in Liskeard, Cornwall, are a specialist waste disposal and recycling company, with a long term commitment to delivering quality to their customers, ranging from local authorities, NHS trusts and private companies and individuals.
Over recent years as the company has grown, so too did the number of incidents both off and on site, resulting in an increasing repair bill to vehicles, and concerns about the possibility of injury. Many steps have been taken to improve driver skills, within the last two years all drivers have undertaken Safed training(www.safed.org.uk), digital tachograph where required, tipper safety awarenesss, and many have gained an NVQ level 2 qualification.
Within the Plant Ops NVQ delivered by WTTL, the need for training was also recognised, with forklift and telehandler training given to those who operate plant machinery. The plant has a majority Polish workforce, and the senior foreman, Piotr, (pictured with some of his colleagues and Assessor Jim White) said that “he feels he is working in a safer environment since having received training”– from an assessors viewpoint it has been interesting to see how much their English has improved as we have worked with them on their training and qualifications.
The management team have noticed that the staff have felt rewarded and feel more part of the team– and have noticed that incidents have reduced to virtually zero, with all staff working more cohesively. It was also noticed that staff turnover has reduced, and that the Polish staff work within the team and communicate more readily with English speaking colleagues
